PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the safety of casting operation in a shifting mold thin slab continuous caster by preventing the leakage of molten metal from a gap between the shifting mold and a molten metal pouring nozzle to eliminate the happening of a secondary disaster, such as steam explosion. ;SOLUTION: A notching part 14 is arranged around the outer periphery of the tip part near a tundish 10 side from a tip sliding number 12 of the molten metal pouring nozzle 11 inserted into a shifting mold 4, and a thermocouple 15 is embedded so that the temp. measured point 15a positions at the tip side by 1-2mm from the notching part 14. When the temp. measured with this thermocouple 15 becomes the preset temp. or higher, a stopper 10a is automatically worked to stop the pouring of molten metal. In such a way, the development of crack communicated from the bottom part of the notching part 14 to the inner side is detected as the starting time of the breakage of the molten metal pouring nozzle 11 with the temp. raising caused by invasion of the molten metal, and the leakage of molten metal is prevented by stopping the pouring of molten metal before breaking the molten metal pouring nozzle 1.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
