On March 30, Arcelor reached an agreement with Danieli concerning the order for the complete revamping of its 3 two-strand slab casters (CC 23, CC 22 and CC 21) in operation at Dunkerque site. Object of this strategic project is to improve plant performances in terms of both quality and productivity and reduce maintenance cost associated with their old designs. In particular: improve slab quality, particularly as far as internal quality is concerned, converting two of the machines from curved to verticalcurved design (CC 23 and CC 21, whose product mix will be mainly focused on ultra low carbon grades for automotive applications); increase casting speed thanks to an increased containment length; reduce caster production downtimes, to be achieved through a fully segmented design, application of top feeding dummy bar practice and use of a fully automated robot-type segment manipulator for segment replacement; increase caster reliability thanks to an advanced low-maintenance design. CC 22 will be revamped through the same guidelines but keeping a curved design, being its product mix focused on higher alloyed grades. The first machine to be renewed will be the CC 23, a 1972 Demag curved caster (12.2-m radius) which will be converted into a fullysegmented vertical-curved caster with a vertical length exceeding 2.2 m, multipoint bending and unbending design and a 8.2 m main radius.
