摘要

The characteristic pattern of a checker plate (CK) is formed in the finishing rolling stand of a hot strip mill (HSM) using a special work roll. Metal is removed from the surface of this roll by an engraving technique in order to produce the many grooves needed. One roll can produce around 1,200 tons of CK before its surface must be ground and a new groove engraved. As this cycle can be repeated three times, the lifetime production of a roll is 3,600 tons. The small production per roll and the high costs for re-engraving the grooves result in high overall production costs.
