Danieli Rotelec successfully commissioned an edge heater (EH) on the Hot Strip Mill (HSM) of Sahaviriya Steel Industries at Bangsaphan, Thailand. The HSM was started up in 1994 and is equipped with a coil box. The EH is installed between the decoiler cradle rolls and the crop shear in an area that is less than 10 m long and crowded with various equipment. The main problems to operate an edge heater under such conditions are: Highly-deformed bars (unlike for HSM without coil box) resulting from the unwinding out of the coil box and bouncing due to deformations and pinch roll application/ release. The situation requires an automatic bar shape detection system to be located between the de-coiler and the EH to control the position of the EH arms/cars and trigger their withdrawal into a safe standby position if the incoming bar is out of shape.
