Gold Fields Slates Tarkwa for Major Capital Projects

Gold Fields Ltd. is undertaking two major capital projects at its Tarkwa gold mine in Ghana at a combined budgeted cost of 175 million dollars. The Tarkwa carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant is being expanded from a design throughput capacity of 4,2 million mt/y to 12 million mt/y at a cost of 126 million dollars. The Tarkwa North Heap Leach complex is being expanded by the addition of a Phase 5 heap leach pad at a cost of 49 million dollars. Construction of the Tarkwa CIL expansion will begin during the first quarter of 2007. Commissioning is scheduled for completion by the second half of 2008. In addition to the main process plant, the project also entails an expansion of tailings storage facilities and associated infrastructure. The Phase 5 heap leach pad will add 39 million mt of stacking capacity to the Tarkwa North Heap Leach complex and will enable continuation of stacking at the complex until June 2011. The 49-million dollars project includes expenditure of 35 million dollars for leach pad expansion and 14 million dollars for associated infrastructure and services to support both Phase 5 and subsequent Phases 6 to 8 of the complex. Construction of the Phase 5 facility is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2007.
