WOMEN CHEMISTS IN THE NATIONAL INVENTORS'HALL OF FAME: THEIR REMARKABLE LIVES ANDTHEIR AWARD-WINNING RESEARCH

The National Inventors' Hall of Fame (NIHF) celebratesthe creative and entrepreneurial spirit of great inventorsby showcasing exhibits and presentations that allowvisitors to experience the excitement of discovery, cre-ativity, and imagination. Founded in 1972 and locatedin Akron, Ohio, USA, the Hall of Fame is dedicated tothe individuals who conceived the great technologi-cal advances which the USA fosters through its patentsystem. Each year a Selection Committee composed ofrepresentatives from national scientific and technicalorganizations votes to select the most qualified inventorsfrom those nominated for the current year. To date, only13 women of the more than 375 inventors thus honoredare members of the Hall of Fame, and of these 13, sixare chemists (1): Rachel Fuller, Brown, Gertrude BelleElion, Edith Flanigen, Stephanie Louise Kwolek, HelenMurray Free, and Patsy O'Connell Sherman.
