India’s coal imports fell sharply last month

Indian coal imports fell by 27pc in March from a year earlier to 15.54mn t because of stronger production by state-controlled mining firm Coal India (CIL). CIL produced 59.19mn t of all types of coal in March, the highest level in its history and almost 1pc above its 58.73mn t target for the month. India’s total coal imports in the 2015-16 financial year that ended on 31 March fell by 34.26mn t from a year earlier, coal secretary Anil Swarup said. Swarup did not give a figure for actual imports or differentiate between coking and thermal coal.
