NRG scraps gas-to-petroleum coke plant plan

Decade-low natural gas prices have killed a plan to convert an NRG Energy natural gas-fired power plant in Louisiana to burn petroleum coke. NRG had acquired state regulatory approval to replace two natural gas turbines at the 230MW Big Cajun I plant near the town of New Roads with a petroleum coke-fired unit, but the company let its air permit expire after Nymex gas settled at $1.984/mmBtu on 11 April.
