TransGrid's general manager of network performance and operations Lionel Smyth said the fault caused all of the generators at Macquarie Generation's Bayswater Power Station to trip. "This fault caused a very small fire in the immediate location of the equipment and the fire was extinguished by TransGrid staff before the fire brigade arrived at the scene," Mr Smyth said. The amount of electricity provided to the various networks was automatically reduced by 1000MW to ensure the blackouts were not more widespread. "When a large amount of power is taken off the market so quickly it causes parts of the system to switch off as a safety measure, to ensure the blacked-out areas are kept to a minimum," TransGrid spokesperson David Fayyad told The Australian newspaper.
