China’s petroleum coke imports last year totalled nearly 10mn t, the highest annual amount on record as the country absorbed supply that traditional buyers in Europe and the US have abandoned. The 9.4mn t of coke the country imported last year exceeded 2012’s total by more than a third and was 90pc higher than 2011, according to China customs data. This surge came despite a declining growth rate in the emerging economy and amid sustained weak pricing for coal, the competing fuel.
