Spain nears EU deal on coal aid

The Spanish government has reached a preliminary agreement with the European Commission for an additional subsidy for its struggling coal mines until 2018. If approved, it would entitle mining companies to an extra ?10/t for 2016 production. The draft agreement establishes a subsidy for domestic coal production based on the difference between international markets and the price in 2013. The government and unions, together with power and mining companies, signed the 2013-18 coal plan in 2013, establishing domestic coal production levels and subsidies for mining companies and communities.
