Bitter cold throughout the US midcontinent and northeast slowed railed crude shipments and shut down refining units this week. Refineries in Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and as far south as Texas reported unit malfunctions and unplanned shutdowns. Railroad Union Pacific told customers that conditions slowed mainline and switching operations and were creating delays of 24 to 48 hours in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.
