U.S. New-Car Fuel Efficiency Better than CAFE Standards

A new study by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) finds that U.S. new-car fleet-wide fuel efficiency in 2012 and 2013 actually beat the U.S. federal corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards. “For the two model years completed under the current standard (2012 and 2013), the achieved performance levels exceeded the anticipated [CAFE] levels by 0.2 mpg [miles per gallon] and 0.1 mpg, respectively,” according to the UMTRI.
