In the international Mathematics Education Research community, the French-speakingcolleagues of Didactics of Mathematics form a unique subgroup that has developed a strongcompendium of theoretical concepts for scientifically analysing the thinking, teaching andlearning of mathematics. However, since many of the subgroup's major developments andtheories have been published in the French language, researchers who cannot read thatlanguage have not always had the opportunity to become aware of recent aspects of thedevelopments. As a consequence of the language barrier, these developments have theirgreatest influence in the countries around the Mediterranean Sea (like Greece, Italy andSpain). Some researchers in Germany as well as in the UK tend to read the Frenchpublications and make use of the theoretical concepts from this community.
