Spatial location of communes and its effect on their social and economic structures

Based on the data submitted by the Olsztyn District Statistical Office, the author grouped communes according to the rate of unemployment and the number of households per number of firms. In the groups selected in this way, the structure of employment by sector, structure of industries in non-agricultural economic activities, quantitative and qualitative changes in farms, and demographic processes (migrations, structure of age and education), have been analysed. The preliminary results of analysis explicitly prove that the development of non-agricultural economic activities activates the developmental mechanisms in a given area (e.g. increase in investments), enhances their attractiveness characterised by a positive balance of migration, and contributes to the improvement in the structure of population, both in terms of age and education.
