Drilling deep well bores, especially with inclined trajectories, is becoming increasingly common in challenging environments such as deepwater, tectonically active areas and subsalt regions. Exploiting these hard-to-reach resources is usually accompanied by tough challenges in maintaining borehole stability. According to recent estimates, about 40% of nonproductive time (NPT) is attributable to geopressure and geomechanical issues such as stuck pipe, lost circulation, kicks, shallowwater flows, sloughing shale and wellbore instability. This NPT costs the industry about USD8 billion a year by some estimates.
