UNDERSTANDING THE TERM 'COMPETENT PERSON'

Since the introduction of Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) in 2005, the law now firmly states that there must be a 'Responsible Person' who is accountable for reducing the risk of fire and its spread, ensuring that fire protection measures in his/her premises are maintained/repaired and that an appropriate fire risk assessment of the building is undertaken. The Responsible Person may seek to appoint a Competent Person to undertake a suitable fire risk assessment of his/her premises but what exactly constitutes a 'Competent Person?', asks the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP).
