The system has a sound capturing device (30) e.g. lapel mike, for capturing sounds emitted by a speaker addressing a person. A processing system (20) e.g. personal micro-computer, analyzes sound data transmitted by the capturing device. The system transmits a partial phonetic transcription (40) of the sound data to a head-up display device (10), to be displayed in the field of vision of the person so that the person observes both the movement of the lips and/or the movements of the speaker and the phonetic transcription. An independent claim is also included for a method for displaying a phonetic transcription of a pronounced word of a hearing-impaired person, by a speaker.
