Newcomers discover Norway

The oil and gas exploration and production industry on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) began when Ekofisk, the first Norwegian offshore field, came on stream in 1971. Since that time, 60 fields have been discovered and have to date produced a total of 25.6 billion boe, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. Many of those 60 fields have now ceased production. However, in a trend that is being mirrored across the industry, some fields previously shut down, including Yme and Mime in the southern part of the Norwegian North Sea, are being prepared for redevelopment.
