IT suppliers shed few tears for Becta

Technology experts have given the thumbs-up to the coalition government's decision to axe Becta - the quango that promotes IT use in schools - in its first 6.2bn pounds tranche of public spending cuts. Teachers and educationalists were more critical of the move, though. On 24 May, the new government announced that the technology agency for schools would close by November because it was seen as a low-value programme. The move will ultimately save the government 80m pounds and is part of its plan to address the budget deficit of 156bn pounds in phases.
