NATIONAL FIRE SPRINKLER NETWORK PARLIAMENTARY SEMINAR--4 FEBRUARY 2008

This seminar, titled 'Reducing the impact of fire on communities and the environment' was held in the Houses of Parliament under the sponsorship of the All-Party Fire Safety and Rescue Group. Some 130 delegates from the fire sprinkler industry, the fire and rescue services, the insurance industry, standards organisations and other interested bodies listened to a variety of speakers on a variety of topics, with question and answer sessions concluding both the morning and afternoon sessions. Pamela Castle OBE, Chair of the Business and Community Safety Forum (BCSF), opened the morning session with a short introduction on aspects which would be explored in more detail by other speakers. She noted that the concept of the interdependence of economic social and environmental issues is not a recent development, however, and it was after some 20 years of debate that the concept of Sustainable Development or Sustainability was defined in 1987 by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development as ensuring that we meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs - now generally adopted.
