Report of the Technical Consultation on International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas. Rome, 4-8 February and 25-29 August 2008

The Technical Consultation on International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas was convened by FAO at the request of the twenty-seventh session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) (Rome, 5-9 March 2007). The Consultation reviewed and negotiated the draft FAO International Guidelines during two sessions. It was stressed that a key objective of these guidelines was to guide States and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) in their implementation of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 61/105, towards long-term sustainable use of deep-sea fisheries resources and prevention of significant adverse impacts on vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs).This document contains the report of the Technical Consultation, as well as the FAO International Guidelines as adopted by the meeting.
