Water adsorption in acetylated birch wood evaluated through near infrared spectroscopy

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the interactions that occur between water molecules and chemically modified wood structure by near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. In this context, birch wood samples, presenting different weight percent gained (WPG) values were exposed to three RH values media, and thereafter the NIR spectra were recorded. It has been noted that the bands assigned to the combination of stretching and deformation vibration of the OH (1920 nm) and the first overtone of the OH stretching vibrations (1426 nm) decreased in intensity with the increasing the WPG values. The presence of three different possible hydrogen bonds involved between the water molecules and the wood structure was observed. Correlations of the data obtained byNIR spectroscopy and dynamic vapour sorption measurements were also done.
