The variation in high (HMW) and low (LMW) molecular weight glutenin subunits and #gamma#-gliadins has been studied in 153 Spanish landraces and old cultivars from the durum wheat collection maintained in the Genetic Resources Center of the INIA. The analyses have shown that these materials possess a great genetic variability for the proteins analized compared with landraces from other countries and comercial varieties. Furthermore, the Spanish landraces have higher frecuencies than comercial culfivars for some protein allelic variants with a positive influence on quality. These proteins are the HMW subunits 1 and 2~* (coded at the Glu-Al locus) and the type 2 LMW pattern (coded at the Glu-3 and Glu-B2 loci). On the basis of these results it could be concluded that Spanish landraces varieties of durum wheat could be very useful genetic resources for breeding of the crop quality in Spain.
