摘要

Presbyopia is an unwelcome fact of aging. The loss of accommodation, the ability to modulate the focal length of the eye, typically manifests itself in the early-to-mid 40s, as the need to wear glasses for near work such as reading. Presbyopia is a multifactorial problem related to increased rigidity of the lens, loss of ciliary muscle function, and loss of zonular elasticity.Traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs) are designed to remain fixed in a fibrosed lens capsule and have a single focal point behind the lens. Although a small minority of patients implanted with these monofocal IOLs and targeted for emmetropia in both eyes can have adequate distance and near vision, the only way to consistently achieve this outcome with monofocal lenses is through monovision.2'3 Typically, the dominant eye is targeted for distance and the nondominant for near. However, approximately 25% of people cannot adapt to this situation, and patients may experience a loss of binocular function and depth perception.
