Organic matter assessment should always be made on a qualitative and quantitative basis. There are many practical ways to successfully achieve organic matter reduction targets in the short term if problems are being caused by excess amounts. Correct selection of the various control methods available will influence the success, time taken, cost involved, and level of disruption. Organic matter management programmes will invariably revolve around both curative and preventative measures. Sustained programmes of aggressive curative treatments through the year are not always needed if the right choices are made at renovations times. It is also essential that comprehensive preventative measures are also developed to avoid disruptive future curative programmes.
