If the quality of a football pitch is to be sustained, a wide range of maintenance operations needs to be carried out, including mowing, fertiliser application, sand dressing, aeration, irrigation, weed/pest control and renovation. However, very oftenthe amount of work that can be undertaken is restricted by the budget that is available. There is very little published information to help turf manager make objective decisions on maintenance priorities in terms of their cost-effectiveness. The aim ofthis study was to develop a system that could be used to relate pitch management costs toplaying surface quality after wear, and thereafter to determine priorities for three of the main management inputs of fertiliser application, sand dressing and aeration.
