Algeria Builds New Gas Pipe

Algeria's state Sonatrach has awarded $1.4 billion worth of contracts for the 9 Bcm/yr GK3 gas pipeline, which will establish an additional route to link the giant Hassi R'Mel field in central Algeria to export outlets on the coast at Skikda and El Kala. The first two sections of pipe - a 270 km stretch from Hassi R'Mel to Chaiba and a 163 km link from Chaiba to Mechtatine - went to Egypt's Petrojet, while Italy's Saipem will build the final 351 km section from Mechtatine to Skikda and El Kala.
