Legal Ease Harassment Investigations Policies Protect Employers, Workers

When an employee complains of harassment, whether the alleged behavior is based on sexually inappropriate behavior, racial abuse, bullying or other forms of harassment, employers must be prepared to act quickly. Morale may suffer, not just for the employee, but for coworkers who witness the behavior. If employees don't feel comfortable going to management, they might quit rather than complain, leaving employers at risk of losing good workers. Or they might decide to turn to a state or federal agency, or a plaintiffs' attorney, for resolution. Establishing policies to handle harassment investigations can help employers avoid lawsuits, federal inquiries and/or nasty public relations battles. A clear, consistent and thorough policy can also create a more comfortable working environment for employees at every level of the company.
