Smoke control is a concern for almost all foundries. Although afterburners have been used to control VOC emissions for decades, it wasn't until the early 1980s that the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) mandated their use for controlling smoke from wax burnout furnaces. Since that time, virtually all state and local agencies have adopted similar regulations.
