The effect of supplementing isonitrogenous concentrate mixtures (control, deep stacked poultry litter (DSPL) or uromol bran mixture (UBM)) with naturally fermented urea-wheat straw (FWS) or uromol-impregnated wheat straw (UmIWS) on the biochemical changes in the rumen and blood of buffaloes, was assessed. Concentration of total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) was higher with FWS than with UmIWS, irrespective of the concentrate mixture fed. Buffaloes fed on DSPL supplemented with FWS or UmIWS had lowerTVFA levels than the other dietary combinations. Rumen ammonia-N levels were higher in groups fed on uromol as UBM or UmIWS compared with the other groups. The low TVFA and high ammonia-N concentration resulted in higher rumen fluid pH in UmIWS-fed groups than in FWS-fed groups. The increase in TVFA and TCA-N levels with FWS indicated more efficient rumen microbial protein synthesis compared with UmIWS. The poor performance of DSPL-UmIWS diet was also confirmed by low blood glucose and serum protein concentration associated with high urea-N and creatinine levels. The results suggest that uromol bran and/or deep stacked poultry litter is better utilized with improved crop residues like fermented wheat straw.
