Future accountable care organizations (ACOs) must align financial incentives, effectively deploy health information technology with coordinated care, and demonstrate value through quality outcomes and cost reduction. Academic health systems are well positioned to develop, pilot, and disseminate new patient-focused models of care and performance measurements, promoting research in the science of care delivery.
