The use of thermodynamic engine cycle simulations during powertrain development has become well established over the last several decades. Such engine simulations provide valuable insight into the various aspects of engine operation and are useful for interpreting experimental results, completing detailed parametric evaluations and evaluating powertrain concepts. This paper will present some examples of the use of thermodynamic engine cycle simulations. First, examples of basic cylinder parameters and overall engine performance parameters will be presented. Next, three case studies will be reviewed which illustrate the types of engine assessments that these simulations can provide.
