Dimensional Verification of Carbon Fibers Reinforcement for Organic Matrix Composite Materials

Nowadays the technological society requires materials with low density but with high strength and stiffness and therefore high capacity to absorb and transmit loads. One of these groups of materials that has undergone significant development resulting in improved technical specifications, are polymeric matrix composite materials. These materials are made from a polymeric matrix (mainly, an epoxy matrix) and reinforcing fibers. This paper is focused towards an initial approach to the dimensional inspection methodologies of reinforcing materials, in particular carbon fiber fabrics in order to know their microgeometric configuration. The inspection process is based on dimensional measures and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis in the dry carbon fiber fabric preform, the raw material prior to manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. This paper shows two important points; the first point the microgeometric configuration of the row material for FRCM and the other, the techniques used to measure have a great potential for high mechanical precision characterization of fiber.
