Tailored screening and prevention strategies can reduce morbidity and mortality from breast and ovarian cancer, making it important to identify individuals at risk. Clinical criteria have been developed to assess patients with at least a 20%-25% chance of having an inherited predisposition to breast or ovarian cancer (Box 1). It is these patients for whom genetic risk assessment is strongly recommended.
