A Comparative Study on the Radial and Indentation Forging of Thick-walled Tubes

摘要

Both of the radial forging and indentation forging processes can be used for internal forming of tubes. In radial forging process, a mandrel is positioned inside the work to obtain final inner diameter; while in indentation forging process, a profiled tool is penetrated inside the workpiece. Prediction and control of residual stresses for enhancing the fatigue life and dimensional stability of products is essential. For investigating the residual stresses state in these forming processes, axisymmetric models were developed by using the nonlinear FE method. The numerical results are validated with some experimental data. The results show that products with the same final geometry produced by these two methods have significant difference in required deformation loads and residual stresses distribution.
