Advancing practice: From staff nurse to nurse consultant. Part 11: Moving forward positively

This series is designed to help you advance your nursing practice. Previous articles have explored; courses, conferences, publication, problem solving, leadership, setting objectives and a number of other key areas relating to advancing practice. This article discusses the importance of moving forward positively in terms of your career and nursing practice.Some years ago I was working -with an NHS trust, helping them to develop and implement clinical supervision. The key message that we wanted staff to identify with and expect from clinical supervision was the idea of'moving forward positively'. The clinical and managerial staff with whom I was working were unanimous that the key to developing patient care and supporting staff was to develop a way of thinking and working that looked for solutions, rather than 'wallowed' in the problems.
