Mental health services must improve care provision

Mental health is one of the major issues facing the UK, with about 300 people out of every 1000 experiencing these problems every year. Nearly one-quarter (23%) of the total burden of disease is attributable to mental health disorders, compared to 16% to cancer and 16% to heart disease. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has a duty under the Mental Health Act to monitor how services in England exercise their powers and discharge their duties in relation to individuals who are detained in hospital under the Act or are subject to community treatment orders (CTOs) or guardianship. The prime objective of this duty is to protect the rights of people who are subject to the powers of the Act and to review the use of legal powers of compulsion.
