Music interventions for preoperative anxiety: Summaries of Nursing Care-Related Systematic Reviews from the Cochrane Library

What are the effects of music interventions in addition to standard care versus standard care alone on preoperative anxiety in surgical patients? Most people who undergo surgery experience feelings of anxiety. Anxiety can have a negative impact on the induction of anaesthesia, wound healing, risk of infection and postoperative recovery. Commonly, pharmacological interventions are administered prior to surgery to help reduce anxiety; however, they can cause adverse effects and delay recovery. Non-pharmacological interventions such as music may assist in reducing anxiety; therefore, a systematic review1 was warranted.
