Farly in 2012, BJN reported on the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) UK-wide commission chaired by Lord Willis of Knaresborough that was set up to investigate the education of pre-registration nurses (Glasper, 2012). In November 2012, the RCN published its findings in a report entitled Quality with Compassion: The Future of Nursing Education (RCN, 2012). Importantly for the profession, the commission found no impediments in the current system of educating nurses that could be implicated in the recent media reports of poor practice and a decline in standards of care. Additionally the commission did not uncover any evidence that degree-level registration was undermining standards of patient care. To reinforce this, the commission concluded that graduate nurses have and will continue to have a key role in driving up standards and preparing a nursing workforce fit for future working in a variety of roles across many healthcare settings.
