Differences in reported winter and summer dietary intakes in young adults in Spain.

Effect of season on the diet of adults (19-40 yr old) in Ponferrada, northwest Spain, was investigated. Participants (n = 142 men and 161 women) recorded their intake twice (in winter and summer) using the 7 non-consecutive-day dietary record method. Intakes of 247 foods (arranged into 16 major food groups) and 27 nutrients were examined. Intakes of most fruits and vegetables, as well as some milk products, showed significant seasonal differences. In men, wt. of food consumed daily was higher in winter than in summer. In winter, men had higher average energy intakes than in summer; moreover, intakes of many nutrients were higher in winter than summer for both men and women. Results indicate substantial variation in nutrient intakes between winter and summer. Accordingly, in summer, men and women in northwest Spain achieve lower proportions of RDA for a large number of nutrients than in winter. It is concluded that season of the year should be taken into account when conducting dietary surveys.
