Crammer's Corner The C5A: what does a passing candidate look like?

A question that is frequently asked of MRCCP examiners is how we tell apart a passing candidate from a failing one. This is not always as easy as it may seem as even the best candidate will struggle to perform optimally in all their 13 cases. Generally, however, passing candidates will demonstrate sound consulting behaviour that runs through most of their cases, allowing for the examiners to feel confident in their performance. The most noteworthy aspect of good consulting behaviour is seen in consultations that are fluent, interactive with the patient and relevant to the issues being presented. The doctor can bring the patient into the consultation as a shared partner and can constructively discuss the problem presented, including topics where there is either little knowledge or certainty (either the doctor's own lack of knowledge or the areas of general uncertainty).
