Colonic bypass: an alternative approach to slow transit constipation in elderly patients.

The surgical procedures commonly performed for severe constipation is total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis, and subtotal colectomy with ileosigmoid anastomosis or cecorectal anastomosis. However, subtotal and total colectomy lead to small bowel obstruction in some patients, and it is a significant operation to the patients, especially the elderly ones. Colonic bypass with cecorectal anastomosis was a novel approach for the treatment of slow transit constipation (STC).
