COLLECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF Culicoides MIDGES IN ASSAM

So far no epidemic of Culicoides bom disease has been reported from Assam and any other states of North-Eastern region (Anon., 2004; Joardar et al., 2009), though there are reports of prevalence of Culicoides midges from this region. In Assam, some species of Culicoides are very common more or less throughout the year (Sen and Fletcher, 1962). C. enophelis (Edwards, 1922), C. flavicutatus (Wirth and Hubert, 1959), C. kamrupi (Sen & Das Gupta 1959), C. oxystoma (Kieffer, 1910), C. peregrinus (Kieffer, 1910) and C. shortti (Smith and Swaminath, 1932) are the species which were recorded from Assam (Prasad et al., 2009).
