A morally ethical perspective "would interpret the duty of candour simply as having to tell the whole truth at all times. But are there situations where non-disclosure might be justified? A utilitarian ethical perspective would consider the issue of disclosure in terms of 'best interest' in situations where full disclosure may be deemed to cause more harm than good. Clinical judgments need to be made about what information we offer, perhaps drawing on experienced colleagues for a second opinion. Central to such decisions is the need to recognise and respond to service users as people rather than conditions.
