Conversion of a 2,500 t/h Stacking Conveyor into a 6,300 t/h Radial Stacker

Ultimately there are two criteria by which the success of this design could be judged: technically, the challenge of making the machine work needed to be overcome; and economically, the finished product had to cost less than any alternative arrangement that could have provided a similar stockpile volume.Other concepts were considered and among them were options that would have cost less than the construction of a new radial stacker. Options such as extending the existing stockpile conveyor and the development of an aerial tripper had been considered and rejected on the basis of the original engineering estimate for the re-configuration of the stacker as a radial machine.The completed machine was a success on both economic and technical counts. The final cost to engineer, supply, fabricate and erect the machine was 80 percent of the estimated replacement cost of a new similarly sized radial stacker and 60 percent of the cost of extending the conveyor. Down time was kept within the designated shut down period, and, in fact, the conversion of the machine from fixed to slewing was not the critical path of the shut down.
