When it comes to the rearing of poultry water is critical, yet it receives very little attention by the average farmer. This article will highlight some of the key practical aspects of water and its management for breeders. Water should be potable (fit to drink) and as such it should be clear with no suspended matter or debris in it. The water should not contain any disease causing micro-organisms and in particular should be free of faecal coliforms, whose presence is indicative of faecal soiling and pseud-omonads. Ideally, the quality of the water used should be that of mains water and typical maximum acceptable limits of minerals are shown in the table below.
