A transformer the size of a family house is destined for one of the world's longest and highest-rated high-voltage DC transmission systems. The 800kV unit, claimed to be the first of its kind in the world, has successfully completed final tests. It is one of ten that Siemens is building for China's 1,400km Yunnan-Guangdong link, which, from mid-2010 onward, will transmit 5GW of power.
