A Study of the Efficacy of the Use of Expletives in Tamil in Translating From English to Tamil

English is an inflectional language. Adding emphasis in English is a matter of manipulation of sentence structure in written discourse and manipulation of phrasal or sentence stress in spoken English. Insofar as Tamil is an agglutinative language, emphasis can be added to any sentence in writing or utterance by the addition of appropriate expletives. This paper has studied how successfully could expletives be used to add emphasis to a translated text in Tamil. This study has used Dr. N. Ramani's translation of Khalil Gibran's "The Prophet" to identify the use of expletives to advantage. It has also studied a parallel translation of the same book by Mr. Puviyarasu and has established the advantage of the use of expletives for emphasis.
