Natural Convection Heat Transfer Enhancement in Horizontal Rectangular Fin Array with Dimpled Surface

Dimples are used on the fin surfaces because they produce substantial heat argumentations, with pressure drop penalties which are smaller than other types of heat augmentation devices. Dimples are also attractive heat transfer augmentation devices because they generally require uncomplicated manufacturing procedures. In this study spherical dimples are carved on fin surfaces to enhance the heat transfer and also inline and staggered type arrangement of dimples are studied. The fins are also tested for one side dimple and both side dimple. The results are presented for range of Grashof Number 6.13×10~5 to 16.61×10~5. The results obtained are compared with those for plain fins. It is attributed that heat transfer enhancement is achieved by dimpled surfaces. The results also show that the effect of Inline and Staggered arrangement plays an important role in enhancement of heat transfer. The effect of one side dimple and both side dimple is also studied for heat transfer augmentation.
